Whatsapp experiences busiest day as it handled 64 billion messages in 24 hours

More than 20 billion messages were sent and 44 billion messages were received through the app in the space of 24 hours.

JUST IN CASE there was any doubt over WhatsApp’s popularity, the app announced it had its most successful day yesterday with 64 billion messages sent during April Fools Day (For anyone confused, the reason why outbound messages is much larger than inbound is because it includes sending the same message to groups).

The app, which currently has more than 465 million users – 320 million of which are daily active users – has been steadily growing since Facebook announced it would be purchasing the app.

But it’s not the only messaging app to experience its own records. One of its main rivals, Line, announced it passed the 400 million registered user mark yesterday, having only crossed the 300 million mark back in November.

The makers say the amount of daily new users has reached 1.7 million per day, and the number of countries with over 10 million registered users rose to 10, including the US, Korea, Mexico and Malaysia.

As for messages, it’s set its own records for most chat messages sent (10 billion per day), sticker messages (1.8 billion per day) and phone calls made (over 12 billion per day). However, it didn’t reveal how many of those 400 million are active users.

And finally, Telegram, an app that also benefited from WhatsApp’s deal with Facebook, announced a few days ago that it now has 35 million monthly active users, while the last announcement from Viber showed it had 280 million registered users – 100 million monthly active users.
