World-famous Irish tenor to be commemorated on new coin

John McCormack was once the most popular singers in the world and was well-known for his rendition of “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”.

A NEW €10 coin in honour of famous Irish tenor John McCormack is to be launched by the Central Bank of Ireland today.

John McCormack was one of the most popular singers in the world in the early 20th Century and was well-known for his renditions of “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” as well as “Molly Bawn”.

International star

He was particularly popular in the US and had a role to play in cultivating Irish-American pride.

He became an international star, selling out shows in Ireland, England, the US and Australia. In 1928, he received the Papal Count from Pope Pius XI in recognition of his work for Catholic charities.

The coin being launched today is being issued as part of the Europa Coin Programme and is made of silver. There are just 8,000 being issued.
