SWEDISH PHOTOGRAPHER PAUL Hansen has won this year’s World Press Photo Contest for his image of a funeral in Gaza.
The picture chosen by the international jury shows a group of men, including the young victims’ uncles, carrying the bodies of two children killed by an Israeli missile strike.
Two-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and his older brother Muhammad are being taken through Gaza City streets to a mosque for a burial ceremony. The body of their father Fouad, also killed in the strike, is visible on a stretcher in the background of the shot.
The mother of the household was taken to intensive care in a nearby hospital.
The photograph was taken on 20 November 2012 for the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter.
“The strength of the pictures lies in the way it contrasts the anger and sorrow of the adults with the innocence of the children. It’s a picture I will not forget,” said judge Mayu Mohanna.
Almost 105,000 images were submitted by 5,666 photographers from 124 countries.
