You made it: Earth successfully survives predicted Mayan apocalypse

At noon Irish time, it turned midnight on some of the US’s westernmost islands – meaning the entire world has now made it to December 22.

It had been suspected by some that the failure of ancient Mayan calendars to extend beyond December 21, 2012 could indicate the end of the planet as we know it.

It evidently now appears that the Mayans had simply not bothered to calculate a calendar beyond the 5125 years that their South American civilisation had existed in.

In fact, not only has the entire world now made it to December 22, but it’s been December 23 in some parts of the Pacific archipelago nation of Kiribati for three hours now.
