THE HISTORIC STATE visit by President Michael D Higgins to the United Kingdom has drawn to a close.

He spent the week meeting and greeting with a range of British leaders, and stressed that there is currently an unprecedented “closeness and warmth” in relations between the two nations – but did it make any difference?
