One of the worst traffic black spots in Dublin could be getting overhauled

But another part of Dublin could be getting smaller for cars.

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL has published a plan which they hope will make driving around the port and 3Arena easier.

The council wants to improve the Point Roundabout outside the arena, which has become known for traffic congestion, particularly on the night of events.

According to the council, the plan is to do away with the roundabout altogether and install a three-armed signaled junction, with a left slip road from North Wall Quay to East Wall Road.

An additional traffic lane will be added on the East Wall Road, with the aim of improving the flow of traffic onto the East Link bridge.

The council says that the plan will bring “significant improvement to pedestrian and cycle facilities in the area, especially crossing facilities at the junction of North Wall Quay and East Wall Road”.

The council is taking feedback on the plan until the end of August.

Amiens Street

However, a plan to reduce the car space on Amiens Street, which serves Connolly train station, has been called “madness”.

The proposal is included in the Clontarf to Amiens Street Cycle route plan.

Chair of the capital’s central Area Committee Nial Ring said the plan was “absolute madness”.

This proposal to make Amiens Street one lane in and out from Talbot Street to Buckingham Street junctions is yet another example of the prolonged, continued and orchestrated attack on motorists in the city.

“AA Roadwatch have congestion from the Five Lamps to Amiens Street as a regular feature in their traffic updates – with this proposal they would have to include back up at North strand, Fairview, Malahide Road, Howth road, Clontarf Road and beyond to their broadcast and I dread to think of evening Southside to Northside rush hour as traffic flows past Busarus in two lanes only to meet one at the Talbot street junction.”
