MINISTER FOR JUSTICE Alan Shatter this morning made it clear that whatever the government decides to do about the expert group on abortion, it will definitely allow for termination when there is a risk of suicide.
The Minister said that the Supreme Court decision on the X Case and two separate referendums have made it abundantly clear that leaving out the suicide provision is “not an option”.
Some anti-abortion campaigners have argued that suicide should not a reason to allow abortion in Ireland, with a small number arguing that it could lead to pregnant women ‘faking suicidal risk’ in order to obtain a termination.
So today we’re asking: Should abortion be available where there is a risk of suicide to the woman involved?
