Amazon opens up 3D printing store for creating personalised items

The store will feature more than 200 products at launch, which users can customise in a number of ways.

FOLLOWING IN THE footsteps of eBay, Amazon has become the latest online retailer to open its own 3D printing store, allowing what it claims to be access to “more than 200 unique print on-demand products.”

The products, which range from custom bobble head figurines, phone cases, toys, jewellery and decorations as well as printing equipment and tools, are now available through Amazon’s dedicated portal.

Instead of manufacturing the goods itself, Amazon has partnered with a number of US-based 3D printer manufacturers such as 3DLT who will handle orders placed through the store.

In a statement, the Director for Amazon Marketplace Sales, Petra Schindler-Carter said the move would allow it to “help sellers, designers and manufacturers reach millions of customers… [and] personalise a potentially infinite number of products.”

Amazon has started moving into areas it believes will grow in importance as time progresses. Earlier this year, it launched a dedicated store for wearable technologies such as smartwatches, activity trackers and wearable cameras.

The site also provided a ‘learning centre’ to help show people the benefits of such technology and encourage them to purchase directly from the store.
