SITUATED ON THE shore of Kenmare Bay, Co Kerry, is An Culu, a €4.5m contemporary castle that spans 9,074 sq ft.

Surrounded by a moat with a drawbridge giving access to the property, it’s clear from the outset that An Culu is no ordinary home.

Privacy is the name of the game at this six-bedroom mansion, with a dense woodland surrounding the property and the water of Kenmare estuary making up its southern boundary.

Despite its Gothic-style interior, An Culu was built just 20 years ago.

Throughout its interior, the castle boasts stone balustrades, a sky-blue fresco in the living room, ornate ceilings and cherry and oak hardwood fixtures, while a lift system provides access from the lower ground floor to the fifth floor.

The four bathrooms in the property are fitted with a variety of marble and tile finishes, akin to that of a five-star hotel.

Underground, there’s a ‘grotto’ style swimming pool worthy of a James Bond film, as well as a sauna and steam room.

The meticulous location of An Culu means that most rooms enjoy exceptional, unrivaled views of the bay, with a balcony area on the fifth floor taking advantage of this.

After driving over the drawbridge, a meandering driveway leads through the forest to the parking area at the front of the castle, where a courtyard with lanterns and a circular tower resides.

The grounds are flood-lit, with a large rock face and cascading waterfall on the far side of the drive. Continuing from the main drive is access to the property’s private harbour, complete with a loading jetty and harbour wall.

A terraced outdoor seating area to the south of the castle provides spectacular panoramic sea views, while there is a garage and garden store to the north-east of the property.
