GARDAÍ HAVE THIS morning arrested former chairman and chief executive of Anglo Irish Bank, Seán Fitzpatrick, as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the now defunct bank.

According to RTÉ, the 64-year-old was detained at Dublin Airport and taken to Bridewell Garda Station. It is his third time being arrested as part of the inquiry.

The arrest follows yesterday’s court appearances of two other former senior Anglo executives. Ex-Finance Director Willie McAteer and former head of Irish operations Pat Whelan were both charged in connection with alleged financial irregularities at their old firm.

The men appeared before the Courts of Criminal Justice in Dublin, charged with more than 30 different offences under sections 60 and 383 of the Companies Act.

Photographers Niall Carson and Laura Hutton were on hand to capture images of the businessmen, while TheJournal.ie had a look through the archives for images of the men in happier times. One shot shows McAteer with one-time CEO David Drumm announcing the interim results for March 2008, just months before the collapse of the bank. They reported €667 million profit, a “strong capital position”, a prudent and highly vigilant approach and just 0.52 per cent loan impairments. Read more here.
