Balaclava-wearing man arrested after being nabbed by passers-by

Two men entered a convenience store wearing balaclavas and armed with a knife last night – the second man was intercepted by gardaí after fleeing the scene.

TWO MEN IN their 20s have been arrested after an armed robbery at a convenience store in Co Offaly – and members of the public helped gardaí capture one of them.

The arrests occurred overnight following the armed robbery in Geashill, Co Offaly, at approximately 7.45 pm last night. Gardaí said that one of the men involved had been apprehended by members of the public after the incident.

During the robbery, two males wearing balaclavas and armed with a knife entered a convenience store in Geashill. They threatened and held up staff before leaving the store with an amount of money.

One of the men was apprehended by two members of the public as he left the store and was arrested by gardaí minutes later. The second male fled the scene in a car and during a follow-up operation a car was intercepted by gardaí near Portarlington and the man was arrested.

Both males are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Tullamore garda station.

A knife and all of the money taken has been recovered and the investigation is ongoing.
