A 42-YEAR-old man has been charged after a plane from Rome to Chicago had to be diverted to Belfast so he could be removed from it.

Belfast Airport said yesterday the United Airlines flight had to land in the airport to offload a disruptive passenger. He has since been charged with endangering the safety of an aircraft.

The man, who has dual US-Italian citizenship, was also charged by the airport’s constabulary with disruptive behaviour on an aircraft and common assault.

He is currently in custody in Antrim and will appear in court tomorrow morning.
