There's a brand new Irish biscuit company - and they're baking up plenty of jobs

The new company’s promising a “commercially competitive local Irish source of biscuits”. Sounds delicious.

A NEW IRISH biscuit company is creating 100 jobs at a new factory in Drogheda, it was announced this morning.

East Coast Bakehouse is creating the positions at a planned €15 million food production facility at the Donore Road Business Park.

The premises will be turned into “a state of the art bakehouse, innovation facility, warehouse and offices,” the company says.

According to a statement:

The building, which is the size of a football pitch, is ideally suited to its new purpose with ample space to house the long production lines required for efficient biscuit baking complete with suspended product cooling lines.

Jobs minister Richard Bruton made the announcement at the site this morning. Talking up the coalition’s job creation plan, he called East Coast Bakehouse “a great company and a great example of what we are trying to achieve with our plan”.

CEO of the baking company, Michael Carey, said almost all of the €3 million worth of biscuits sold in Ireland each week were imported.

“We aim to provide a new commercially competitive local Irish source of biscuits,” he added.

“There is also a great opportunity to provide high quality biscuits to UK retailers.”

The East Coast Bakehouse will produce its own brand of biscuits – and will also bake branded products for retailers in Ireland and the UK.
