Bomb disposal expert on trial for attempted murder using grenade

A FORMER ARMY BOMB DISPOSAL expert attempted to murder his pregnant wife by planting a hand grenade in her car after she confronted him about an affair, a UK court heard yesterday.

Victoria Fabian, 33, received serious leg injuries in the March 2010 explosion, but her unborn baby and eight-year-old son were not injured.

Fabian’s husband Nicholas Fabian, 33, of Highview, Vigo, was charged with unlawful possession of ammunition and the attempted murder of Victoria Fabian and her son, the BBC reported last March.

On the opening day of the trial yesterday, prosecution lawyers argued that Fabian stole a hand grenade during weapons training for an army tour of Afghanistan, according to the Telegraph. The court heard that Victoria Fabian confronted her husband over a suspected affair and that examination of his mobile phone showed he had sent that woman a number of texts.

A police examination of the scene indicated that a nylon wire was attached to the pin of the grenade and the steering wheel, indicating that the driver would have pulled the pin, causing the explosion.

The trial continues at Maidstone Crown Court in Kent.
