TV PRESENTER BRENDAN Courtney has been sent a postcard with homophobic slurs, seemingly in retaliation against his promotion of the Yes campaign for the upcoming same-sex marriage referendum (and generally the fact that he is a gay man).

The hate mail was sent to his workplace in Dublin and Courtney told TheJournal.ie he was “a little bit upset, a little bit surprised” when he first read it.

Twice on the postcard, the sender calls him a “faggot”, and signs it off: “Vote No, No, No”.

Through his years as a TV presenter, Courtney never received hate mail of any nature – “even though I’m not that likeable a chap,” he joked.

“I think it’s mental, it’s mad that in this day and age people will take the time to buy a stamp and a postcard and write that – what kind of loon does that?”

“It puts a lot of fuel into the Yes vote,” Courtney continued, adding that he believes this incident shows the “bigotry that still exists in our culture”.

After he shared the hate mail on Twitter and Facebook, he received dozens of messages of support, including this one from Daintree Paper:
