A SUSPECTED SHOOTER has been killed and at least one victim has died after being shot at a hospital in The Bronx in New York City according to a New Y0rk Police Department (NYPD) has confirmed.

“One shooter is deceased at the hospital,” spokesperson J Peter Donald said on Twitter.

The incident began to unfold at about 2.30pm local time (7.30pm Irish time).

A man pulled a rifle from under his white lab coat and opened fire inside the Bronx Lebanon Hospital, one of the city’s largest, killing at least one person and wounding others before apparently taking his own life.

Earlier, the NYPD advised people to avoid the area of Grand Concourse due to the reports of an incident at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital.

It is as yet unclear how seriously injured the other victims are.

The New York Times earlier reported that the three victims of the shooting were doctors at the hospital, citing a fire department source.

It’s understood that the shootings occurred on the 16th and 17th floors at the hospital. It’s also believed that the killer took his own life

Unconfirmed reports suggested that the male perpetrator may have been dressed in a white lab coat, and that he may be an ex-employee of the hospital.

CBS News is reporting that police have confirmed the shooter as a former employee of the hospital.

Television images showed the hospital surrounded by police cars and fire trucks.

Police are still trying to identify how many people have been shot; emergency crews had been kept from going inside the hospital while the shooter was a large.

The 120-year-old hospital has nearly 1,000 beds and one of the busiest emergency rooms in New York City. It is about a mile and a half north of Yankee Stadium.
