Joan2018-08-20http://www.thejournal.ie/profile/330255/bonus-points-doubled-participation-cost-the-lure-extra-7458622/Bonus points have more than doubled participation, but at what cost? The lure of extra points is enticing students to attempt the higher level course irrespective of their mathematical ability. Work across the board suffers because of the time required to study higher level Maths & often students are dropping back to ordinary level in other subjects in order to focus on Maths. Maths now has an almost elite status, while languages & the arts lose out. The killer is that bonus points have not translated into increased numbers opting for STEM subjects at third level. Students who have no intention of studying STEM subjects are killing themselves for the perceived advantage & prestige of 25 extra points & everything else is paying the price.

Margate2018-08-20http://www.thejournal.ie/profile/397605/agree-exactly-joanwhilst-gov-clapping-themselves-thinking-initiative-7459075/Agree exactly with ‘ Joan’…whilst the Gov are clapping themselves in the back thinking this ” initiative” has been a great ” success”, one has to ask is ” Success” measured simply by increased uptake??? At what “price” ? 3rd level lecturers, esp of courses requiring certain Maths competency levels, are all despairing of our students’ capabilities in the Maths areas- citing a total mismatch between the incoming maths skills/ability levels vs Course req’s. This is a massive issue in 3rd level, and hugely contributing to dropout rates in many disciplines. Standards dropped and diluted over last no of years, no argument.

Damon162018-08-20http://www.thejournal.ie/profile/576096/most-people-maths-level-7459516/Most people do not need to do maths at that level. Simple as that. It’s only necessary if you are considering a career in science, engineering computer science or some aspects of finance. What we need to do is to prepare the minority of individuals who have an interest or aptitude in maths well in the subject. Instead we’ve just dumbed down the curriculum at higher level to accommodate more people. That helps no-one as it doesn’t prepare people who are studying with a view to their career for actual university levels maths. Waste of time.
