SUPPORTERS OF FRANCE and Croatia blocked traffic on Dublin’s O’Connell Bridge for a time this evening, letting off flares and climbing on top of the landmark statue of Daniel O’Connell.

Traffic monitoring services reported that lanes on the bridge had been closed to traffic temporarily.

“There’s an incident on O’Connell St blocking inbound traffic towards O’Connell Bridge. Avoid the area,” AA Roadwatch advised.

Daithí Doolan, a councillor from Ballyfermot, tweeted that there was a positive atmosphere at the gathering. The mood, he said, was “totally celebratory”.

Initial pictures showed a mostly Croatian crowd – but they were eventually joined by France supporters.

The Croatians, who were attempting to win their first major international tournament today, were beaten 4-2 by France in Moscow.

Gardaí were directing traffic on the bridge this evening.
