THE CHRISTMAS BONUS for social welfare recipients is set to be paid this week according to the Department for Social Protection.

The bonus will be 85% of any person’s weekly payment. This is an increase from the 75% paid in 2015, and is the highest level the payment has been since it was partially re-introduced in 2014.

1.2 million welfare recipients are set to receive the payment – 590,000 pensioners and 620,000 other recipients.

The payment of the bonus is expected to give a boost to the Christmas economy with the retail sector to bring in a €221 million windfall.

The 85% payment will see those on a state pension benefit to the tune of €198.30 from the payment, while those receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance of €188 weekly will receive €159.80.

“I’m very pleased that the Christmas Bonus is being paid again this year. It’s an important payment in the run-up to the festive season,” said Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar.

“The most important impact of the Christmas Bonus is for the recipients. But it also represents a significant boost for local economies,” he added.
