It’s all well and good snuggling up at home to watch a Christmas movie, but what about watching it on the big screen? There’s better visuals, surround sound and, not to forget, cinema popcorn (or nachos, we won’t judge).

There’s even more of a reason to go if you missed your favourite Christmas movie when it came to the cinema the first time around. Plus, you can go under the guise of bringing the kids when, in reality, it’s mostly for you.

From classics to new releases, these are some of the best family-friendly Christmas movie screenings around the country throughout the month of December…

Naughty Or Nice Season at Light House Cinema: With Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Elf and The Muppet Christmas Carol just some of the family-friendly Christmas movies on show, you might want to take more than one trip to the Light House Cinema. Screenings are likely to sell out as Christmas approaches, so be sure to book in advance.

Suits: varies depending on chosen film. When: throughout December. Where: Light House Cinema, Smithfield, Dublin 7. Costs: varies. Find out more information and book here.

Elf and Home Alone at Brooks Hotel: With just 26 seats, you’ll feel like you’re in your own private cinema. There’s even a children’s movie screening deal for €15 per person which includes cinema admission, hot chocolate, homemade cookies and freshly made popcorn. Tickets remain for Home Alone and Elf but some other films have already been booked up.

Suits: the whole family (PG rating). When: 2-19 December. Where: Brooks Hotel, 62 Drury St, Dublin 2. Costs: varies. Book tickets here.

The Muppet Christmas Carol at Triskel Arts Centre: A story that adults and children alike can enjoy, the Muppets tell their version of the Dickens’ classic. This tale of an old man’s redemption on Christmas Eve as he’s visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future pulls on the heartstrings even when the Muppets are involved.

Suits: all ages (G rating). When: 16-23 December. Where: Triskel Arts Centre, Tobin St, Cork City. Costs: varies. Book tickets here.

Christmas Selection at Eclipse Cinemas:  A mix of classic and new Christmas films are being shown at Eclipse Cinemas in Bundoran and Lifford throughout the month of December, including Home Alone, Nativity Rocks! and It’s A Wonderful Life. Just be sure to bring tissues for the weepier ones on that list, okay?

Suits: varies depending on chosen film. When: throughout December. Where: Eclipse Cinemas Bundoran and Eclipse Cinemas Lifford-Strabane. Costs: varies. Find out more information and book here.

Drive-in Christmas Movies at Galway Racecourse: Grab your pillows, blankets and comfy clothes and get cosy in your car for Galway Racecourse’s drive-in movies. Santa Claus : The Movie, Home Alone and The Polar Express are among the films being shown but you’ll have to be quick as some showtimes are already sold out.

Suits: varies depending on chosen film. When: 1-2 December. Where: Ballybrit Racecourse, Galway. Costs: varies. Find out more information and book tickets here.
