COMMEMORATIONS ARE TAKING places across the country to mark the 97th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

In Dublin, more than 350 Defence Force personnel took part in the State ceremony in O’Connell Street – which was led by President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny, and Justice Minister Alan Shatter.

The tricolour was lowered and the 1916 proclamation read aloud by a member of the Defence Forces officer. The President then laid a wreath to remember those who died in the Rising and a minute’s silence was observed, RTÉ reports.
