10 situations where it's definitely okay to be a commitment-phobe

Not the best at decision-making? Sometimes that’s a good thing.

THE WORLD IS not always a friendly place for those who hate to make decisions. Dinner menus, cinema listings, paint colours… Life flings a lot of choices at us, and there’s only so many times you can say, “Er, why don’t you decide?” or “Can I change my mind later?”

Luckily, there are a few situations out there where a little bit of commitment fear can come in handy – or even put you at an advantage over your more decisive peers.

Commitment-phobes, it’s time to celebrate your reluctance to stick to one thing, because sometimes, it can work in your favour. Here are ten situations where it’s definitely alright to be indecisive…

 1. When you’re at a music festival

Music festivals are like Mecca for commitment-phobes. Why choose one gig to see when you can choose ten? While other revellers are diligently hanging out at the Main Stage all afternoon to be up front for their favourite band, you’re flitting from area to area like the festival pro that you are.

2. When you’re kicking off a new fitness routine

Yoga? Weightlifting? CrossFit? HIIT? Hang on… what’s HIIT again? Don’t panic if you can’t choose just one form of exercise to be your go-to forevermore. A study at the University of South Alabama revealed that you’re more likely to stick to a varied exercise routine than one that’s the same every week, so your body will thank you for your indecision.

3. When you realise you’re watching three TV series at the same time

Yes, you’ve finally made it to season two of Suits, but that new US crime drama is meant to be incredible. Thanks to on demand TV, streaming and recording, you don’t need to decide on just one series at a time – which is lucky, because the thought of doing so makes you want to run a mile.

4. And likewise, when you look at your bedside table and see you’re reading six books at once

There’s the dense Scandi-noir crime novel you’re reading for your book club, the political autobiography your dad loaned you, and the meditation techniques guide you suspect is BS. As a commitment-phobe you probably can’t settle on one book at once, but there’s no right way to read, so do what works for you.

5. When you’re ordering your morning coffee

Gone are the days when your café choices were limited to coffee, tea or, er… more tea. No-one will bat an eyelid if you opt for an almond milk matcha latte just because you like the sound of it. Go forth and revel in your fear of coffee commitment.

6. When you realise your house in is need of a spring clean

The “big clean” is one opportunity to flex your commitment-phobic muscles. Rather than spending hours reminiscing about piles of old receipts and clothes you’ll never wear again, as a commitment-hater you’re naturally ruthless. Fling it all in a bin bag and be done with it.

7. When you get cold feet about that Tinder date

Thanks to the fickle world of online dating, you can feel relatively guilt-free about cancelling a planned rendez-vous at the last minute. Yes, even if it’s because he/she made a heinous grammar mistake in one of their messages. We won’t judge you.

8. When you were on holiday in Thailand and someone suggested tattoos

You couldn’t select a design, so you decided to sit the inking session out. Not so for your hostel roommate, who woke up the next morning with “Ko Pha-Ngan 4 Lyf” etched on his ankle.

9. When there’s an office re-shuffle and suddenly your desk gets moved

Everyone else is moaning about losing the corner desk or easy access to the air-conditioning controls, but you’re perfectly happy with your new set-up. As someone with a fear of commitment, you thrive on change, so a re-jig is a positive development, not a negative one.

10. When the restaurant kitchen is out of the item you ordered

For some, finding out the chef was out of the crab cakes they’d ordered would be enough to ruin their evening. Not for you though. You weren’t even sure if you wanted them anyway.
