TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY will address the nation in a speech to be broadcast on Sunday night.

The Government press office this evening confirmed that the address will take place on RTE One after Sunday’s Nine O’Clock News.

Kenny will make his statement ahead of the Budget 2012 announcement, which will happen on Monday and Tuesday.

There is as yet no details on the substance of the Taoiseach’s statement. Earlier this month, Kenny told his Fine Gael party colleagues that he would focus on the government’s economic strategy and the state’s position.

The speech will be only the sixth time a Taoiseach has delivered a television address of this kind.

In his infamous 1980 speech to the nation, Charlie Haughey told viewers “we are living way beyond our means”. Jack Lynch made two state of the nation addresses on the Troubles and Garrett Fitzgerald also made two such speeches.
