Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys RollingNews.ie

Connolly and Humphreys will do a head-to-head Áras debate for the first time this evening

The debate will take place on RTÉ radio at 5pm.

CATHERINE CONNOLLY AND Heather Humphreys will go head-to-head in the first radio debate of the campaign on RTÉ’s Drivetime this evening.

The two remaining presidential candidates will take part in a debate hosted by RTÉ’s Sarah McInerney and Cormac Ó hEadhra.

Another debate has also been confirmed on another RTÉ Radio programme, This Week, on Sunday.

Recent polling put Connolly ahead of Humphreys but those projections were thrown off by the shock withdrawal of Fianna Fáil’s candidate Jim Gavin.

This evening’s debate will begin at 5pm and for those who want to watch and not just listen, it will be available to view on the RTÉ News channel.

The first debate of the campaign was held on Virgin Media television and the broad consensus among observers was that Connolly came out on top of her two opponents.

The most recent debate also featured the three original candidates and while Gavin continued to struggle, Fine Gael’s Humphreys was more forthright and animated than she was in her comparatively muted first performance.
