PHOTOS: Climbing Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday

On this day every year, thousands of pilgrims scramble up the Reek. Photographer Sergey Sergeev set out to capture the climb.

EVERY YEAR ON the last Sunday of July, thousands of pilgrims set out to climb the Reek – Croagh Patrick – in Mayo.

This is the only day of the year that the tiny church at the top opens. Photographer Sergey Sergeev, who was born in the USSR but has lived in Ireland for the last ten years, set out to capture the spectacle.

“Everyone who makes pilgrimage does it for his or her own reasons, but for all of them this is a spiritual journey,” he writes about his work.

Sergeev’s project, The Pilgrimage, is on show as part of the PhotoIreland Festival 2012.

The exhibition at the Centre for Creative Practices on Pembroke Street Lower, Dublin 2 runs until Friday. Here’s a sample of what’s on show:
