CUPRA has launched its first all electric car! Watch the video above as David O’Caoimh gets a first look.
The CUPRA Born built on the same MEB platform as the ID.3 and has a lot of similarities including the battery sizes and electric motors.
All that said, this EV is different to the ID.3 in many ways. For one, it has a very distinctive ‘CUPRA’ look to it. It’s aggressive and stealthy! It has has some slightly lower and sportier suspension, and comes with the option to get wider rear tyres, which enables you to turn off traction control – now is a good time to mention it’s rear wheel drive!
In terms of battery size and range, here are the three options.
- 45kWh which has a 350km range and 147bhp.
- 58kWh which has a 424km range and 201bhp.
- 77kWh which has a 540km range 227bhp
On the two larger batteries you can get an ‘e-boost’ which can be activated in CUPRA mode, or with the kick-down on the peddle – this brings it up to 227bhp.
The centre of gravity is low, meaning it handles quite well, it has a very responsive ‘progressive steering’ system that instills confidence in the driver.
The biggest rivals for the Born are most likely going to be the ID.3, the Kia e-Niro and the Hyundai Kona Electric.
Overall we really enjoyed the car, it’s new, different and enjoyable.
