THE CURRENT CABINET meets today for likely the last time before an expected cabinet reshuffle tomorrow.

Talks between the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste will resume after the cabinet meeting today, aimed at finding a new top table in Irish politics. Much of the disagreement is believed to focus on the jobs portfolio. Labour want it because of its inherent good news qualities, but Fine Gael are loathe to let it go.

Some newspapers today speculate that up to nine of the current cabinet could either be moved or demoted.

Joan Burton and Enda Kenny spent five hours discussing the makeup of the cabinet yesterday, as well as the coalition’s agenda for the coming years.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan, one of those expected to be safe, says that the reshuffle will be “reasonably significant”.

“I’d expect we’ll have a new Cabinet announced by Wednesday,” he told reporters in Brussels yesterday.

The Taoiseach says that the people of Ireland are not interested in speculation over the cabinet.

“I’ve seen all the wonderful speculation in the last few days I’ve seen at least 10 different Cabinets outlined. What the people want is a government that’s working in the interests of the country.”
