THE ON-GOING GARDAGATE controversy is damaging Fine Gael’s European elections campaign, Mairead McGuinness has said.
Speaking to Karen Coleman from radioep.ie, the Ireland East MEP said that the public will continue to be concerned about it “unless it is effectively dealt with”.
“There’s no doubt there has been damage done,” she said.
“I think where there’s uncertainty, and where the’s a sense of lack of clarity, the public will ask questions.”
McGuinness added that recent slips in opinion polls for Fine Gael could be considered a “wake-up call”.
“Maybe that’s no harm”, she said, and that she hopes the public will look at the track-record of politicians running in the elections.

Both coalition parties saw their support fall in recent opinion polls.
In last night’s Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll, Fine Gael fell five points to 25 per cent, while Labour fell by one point to 8 per cent.
