THE COMMISSION OF Investigation, charged with compiling a report on clerical sex abuse in the Diocese of Cloyne, has been given a two month extension by the government, RTÉ reports.

In January 2009, the Commission of Investigation was asked to investigate the Cloyne Diocese after a previous investigation by the National Board for Safeguarding Children found that child protection practices in the diocese were inadequate and dangerous.

A spokesperson for the Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern told reporters that he has given the the Commission until December 31 to complete its work. The report had been due by the end of this week.
