JOHNNY DEPP HAS sparked controversy with a joke about assassinating the US President – although the actor was quick to follow up by saying he was “not insinuating anything” by his remark.

Depp was at Glastonbury last evening for a screening of his film The Libertine when he asked the audience at the festival “Can you bring Trump here?”

After some jeers and boos from the crowd, he said:

You’ve misunderstood completely. I think he needs help. This is going to be in the press and it’s going to be horrible.
When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?

Depp continued:

I want to clarify: I’m not an actor.
I lie for a living – however, it’s been a while. And maybe it’s about time.

According to the BBC’s report, Depp also said:

It’s just a question, I’m not insinuating anything.

Actor John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln as the US President was attending a play in Washington DC in 1865.

Depp’s comments have been met with criticism online – they come just days after a shooting during practice for a congressional baseball game in Virginia in which Republican congressman Steve Scalise was shot and injured.

ABC News is reporting that the Secret Service is aware of Depp’s comments.
