POST-MORTEMS ARE DUE to be carried out on the bodies of two men who were recovered from the waters off Donegal yesterday.

The two men were named locally as Rimantis Barauskas (50s), from Oldcastle in Meath, and Raimondas Jezdauskas (40s), from Ballymahon in Longford.

The bodies of both men were found near Glencolmcille after they got into difficulty after setting off fishing from Teeling Pier in a rigid inflatable boat (rib) on Saturday.

The body of the first man was found on rocks near Mallinbeg shortly after 10.30am yesterday and a search was launched to locate the second man.

The Sligo based Rescue 118 helicopter was on scene at Mallinbeg Head with a lifeboat from Arranmore also involved in the search.

The crew of Rescue 118 spotted the second man in the water at Malin Mór and the lifeboat crew made their way to the scene and recovered the body just before 1pm.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, the Irish Coast Guard’s John Draper said that both men were Lithuanian nationals and got into difficulty after going out fishing:

Conditions when they went out fishing at about 1pm weren’t too bad, they were quite good. So we’re not too sure what actually occurred or how they ended up in the water obviously but some sort of incident occurred. Possibly conditions worsened locally, got sort of rough, but in any event it seems they were both thrown into the water.

After the bodies were taken from the water they were transferred to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
