HOP OVER THE wooden bridge to Dromore Mill, and you’ll find a house with heaps of history, but all the joys of 2015 living.

The stunning outside of the mill is the first clue that this isn’t your typical home – and at €1,250,000, it’s a steal compared to similar properties in cities such as Dublin.

Of course, with this house, you also get a location that’s in one of the most scenic parts of the country.

With an interesting history behind it, Dromore Mill is in touch with the past, but with all the luxuries of the present day.

It has six beds and five bathrooms, with wet-room style showers in each of the latter.

The stone building is located in the picturesque West Cork, 12km from Bantry and 16km from Skibbereen.

Built in the 19th century, the mill (which used to have an eight-metre wheel outside) was once used to grind stone for the paint industry. But in the 1970s, it was completely converted into a family abode.

Thankfully, the conversion was very sympathetic to the original building, and as you can see, the Victorian facade was preserved.

Inside, they aimed to get as much light into the house as possible, while also uncovering older parts of the home that weren’t noticed pre-restoration.

The open staircase was created using oak beams, keeping with the look of the house but also allowing for more light to flow within.

This wood – like the wood used for shelves and window sills – came from the house itself.

Glass, stone and steel also feature, keeping with the natural feel to the home. That’s also helped by the current owners using lots of plants throughout.

The house is three floors in height, and its ground floor is open-plan, with a large brightly-lit American-style kitchen. ‘American-style’, means, of course, that everything is just that little big bigger than usual.

You’ll also find a living room, dining room, guest bedroom, bathroom and ‘bootroom’ on this level.

Moving upstairs, you find the library and drawing room, with a cathedral ceiling and exposed chimney breast. There’s a really cosy, retreat-like feel to this space.

There’s also an office and a balcony on this first floor – and the three bedrooms, which are connected through an internal ‘bunk’ balcony.

The second floor, meanwhile, is built into the eaves, and it’s where you’ll find the remaining bedrooms.

While this home is a treat in itself, you’re also near the coast and the beautiful sights and sounds of West Cork. Want visitors?

They can stay in the two-bed guest house also on the grounds.
