DUBLIN FIRE BRIGADE has issued a stark warning for homes around the country to be vigilant when it comes to Christmas trees.

The service has shared pictures of house fires that have happened around the city in the past week due to Christmas trees.

In one of the pictures the charred remains of a seasonal tree can still be seen to be standing.

Members of the public have been warned to always switch off their fairy lights when their tree is unattended, and not to use open candles near trees.

Dublin Fire Brigade have also used their Twitter to share a video of a fire-safety test that was carried out in 2010. In it a Christmas tree can be seen catching alight, and within moments it has become completely incinerated, burning the room around it.

The fire is sparked by a fairy light, with it taking less than a minute for the whole thing to burn to the ground.
