Dunnes Stores workers in Gorey are planning on going to work this weekend

DUNNES STORES WORKERS in Gorey – who have had their employment status left in limbo – still plan on heading into work as rostered this weekend.

Staff at the branch of the retailer in Gorey Shopping Centre in Co Wexford were told on Thursday evening that the store has been closed “until further notice”.

A spokesperson for Madate Trade Union told TheJournal.ie this morning that a meeting had been held last night at which the workers decided on the course of action.

Staff will be carrying out miscellaneous duties today, even though the store is not open to customers.

The company is yet to offer an explanation as to why the branch has closed, although speculation is that it is related to a dispute over a side door in the shopping centre. 

There are currently around 100 workers employed by the store.

On the issue of the closure, a letter sent by a property management agent on behalf of the receiver, said that a side door opened by the retailer allowed customers to bypass the main thoroughfare of the shopping centre and this was a breach of their lease obligations.

In a statement yesterday, John Douglas, Mandate General Secretary, said, “the anxiety, uncertainty and stress this has caused those 100 workers is totally unnecessary and unacceptable.”
