TWO MEN HAVE been arrested in Co Armagh in connection with the seizure of around eight million illegally imported cigarettes from a warehouse in the county last night.

The cigarettes were seized following a multi-agency cross-border operation involving the Revenue’s Customs service, HM Revenue and Customs, the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the UK’s Border Agency.

The cigarettes were seized as they were being unloaded from a 40-foot container which claimed to have contained ‘office furniture’.

The container had arrived in Dublin Port in the early hours of Monday morning, when the operation began.

Authorities in the Republic have already seized 35.5 million cigarettes so far this year, with an estimated retail value of around €15m. Seizures in Northern Ireland are not included in that total.
