John Kelly will contest the upcoming general election in Roscommon South-Leitrim as a member of the Labour Party. Kelly was first elected to Roscommon County Council in 2004 as an independent and was re-elected to the body in June 2009. His only previous general election campaign was in 2007 when he gained almost 10 per cent of the vote in Roscommon-South Leitrim. He currently works as a Community Welfare Officer for the Ballaghaderreen area.



Policies
  • Health- retention of services at Roscommon County Hospital, home help carers and medical cards for old people
  • Jobs- we need new thinking to create jobs and to keep the ones we have
  • Turf cutting is a huge issue in this area. The government have not done enough to preserve the turf cutting for local people.

Kelly estimates that, over the years, he has personally raised over €70,000 for the Irish Wheelchair Association through his fundraising efforts.
