Local authorities are responsible for issuing on-the-spot fines to candidates whose election materials remain up after the midnight deadline.
They are also responsible for removing posters that pose a hazard to either pedestrians or road users.
Complaints about such posters can be made directly to the appropriate council.
Local authorities in Dublin issued over 90 fines to candidates in the 2014 local and European elections who did not dispose of their posters by the deadline.
