A IRISH TEENAGER arrested in connection with a computer hacking investigation was able to access a conference call between the FBI and London’s Metropolitan Police because of an error by a member of the Gardaí, it has been alleged.

An FBI indictment filed at a federal court in New York today reveals the details of charges against a 19-year-old and a 25-year-old who are both from Ireland as well as four other people.

The document states that the 19-year-old was arrested today. Gardaí have only confirmed that a man in his late teens has been arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation into computer hacking and is being held at Terenure Garda Station.

An Garda Siochána declined to comment on an “ongoing investigation” when contacted by TheJournal.ie this evening regarding to allegations contained in the FBI indictment.

The document says that the teenager was able to access a conference call between officials from the FBI and the Metropolitan Police in London on 17 January after he hacked into the personal email account of a Garda officer.

“The Garda officer had forwarded work e-mails to a personal account,” the indictment says adding that this allowed the 19-year-old to access the call.

Details of this 17 January conference call were published online last month.

The court document also states that five of the six men cited in the indictment, including the two Irishmen, “conspired to commit computer hacks” including that of the Fine Gael website as well as the HGBGary Inc security firm and computer systems used by the Fox Broadcasting Company.
