FIDELMA HEALY EAMES was convicted of driving without car tax in Galway District Court this morning.

The Fine Gael Senator was fined €1,850, according to RTÉ News.

Judge Mary Fahy said she should be able to pay her motor tax seeing as she was on a good wage from the State.

A spokesperson for Fine Gael told the only comment they would be making about Ms Healy Eames’s conviction for motor tax avoidance was: “The matter has been dealt with by the courts”.

Ms Healy Eames was not in court this morning as she is attending The Seanad where the debate on the Social Welfare Bill gets underway this afternoon.

In a statement, issued by the Fine Gael press office during the summer, the Senator explained why her car was impounded when she was driving in rush hour between Moneenageisha Cross and Cemetry Cross in Galway on 2 July:

On the second of July I was stopped by Gardaí in Galway city and found not to have a valid tax disc. This was due to an oversight on my part. I was completely in the wrong. The car is now taxed.

I wish to apologise to the Gardaí and the public.
