A LOS ANGELES apartment tower under construction was engulfed in a major fire in the early hours of this morning.

More than 250 firefighters battled the blaze at the apartment building which covered an entire block.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the fire in downtown LA could be seen for miles as it burned an apartment tower under construction and damaged two other buildings.

It caused parts of two major freeways to close down.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman David Ortiz says he didn’t think anyone was living or working there.

He says that the 101 Freeway was closed in both directions, while the California Highway Patrol says transition lanes between the 110 and 101 freeways were shutdown.
