AN EVACUATION HAD to take place at a Limerick apartment block after a fire broke out last night.

Around 80 people had to leave the city-centre Mount Kennett apartments after the fire occurred at around 10pm.

Three units of Limerick City Fire and Rescue Services were called to the blaze, which it is believed broke out in an internal refuse store on the ground floor.

The fire service members had to wear breathing apparatus in order to enter the six-storey building to tackle the blaze. Due to the type of refuse on fire, all upper floors became heavily smoked-logged.

Each floor was ventilated as the fire service made their way through the building.

After two hours, the fire was brought under control. Gardaí said that no injuries had been reported.
