A BRITISH REGISTERED vessel was detained overnight by the Defence Forces of Ireland for an alleged breach of fishing regulations.

The Naval Service vessel LE Aisling detained the boat about 180 nautical miles west of the Skelligs.

The vessel is now hauling her nets and will then proceed to Castletownbere under escort.

On reaching the Cork coastline tomorrow morning, the vessel will be handed over to Gardaí.

The Naval Service detained eight vessels off the Irish coast last year but this is the first detention of 2012.
