Do you think Government should do more to bring down fuel costs?

Hauliers and contractors are among those who feel Government hasn’t gone far enough to bring down fuel costs, an MEP said today.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, Government’s emergency excise duty tax cut on petrol and diesel came into effect.

The cut constituted 20c per litre on diesel and 15c on petrol. Separately, the NORA levy of 2c per litre is to be suspended. For hauliers and bus operators, a diesel rebate scheme was agreed which is to be backdated until January.

All in all, there is expected to be a reduction of 17c per litre for petrol and 22c for diesel – but for many people this is not enough given the scale at which fuel prices rose.

Today, Independent Ireland MEP Ciaran Mulloolly met with contractors and hauliers in Portlaoise on the matter, whom he said were threatening a day of action on the M50 as they face financial crisis over fuel costs.

So today we’re asking you: Do you think Government should do more to bring down fuel costs?
