Funeral of Galway schoolteacher takes place in Oughterard

A man in his thirties remains in Gardai custody in connection with the death of the father-of-four, whose body was found in the family pub.

THE FUNERAL OF Galway schoolteacher and publican John Kenny has taken place in Galway today.

The body of the 56-year-old was found in his family’s pub in Oughterard on Sunday afternoon. The post mortem result showed that he had died a violent death.

Kenny was a father of four and taught at a secondary school in Athenry. He also ran the family-owned pub.The Galway Independent reports that his body was discovered by his daughter, who teaches in the same school.

A Garda spokesperson told TheJournal.ie that they are continuing to question a man in his thirties, who can be held until this evening. The man was arrested on Wednesday evening. Gardaí applied to extend his detention period until this evening, and the extension was granted at a special sitting of Galway District Court.

Gardaí have asked to speak to anyone who was in the pub on Saturday night, between 30 and 40 people in all.
