VIDEO: Gardaí on Dublin streets on their new Segways

Oct 31st 2012, 3:24 PM 12,349 51

YOU’VE PROBABLY ALREADY seen the photographs but this is what it looks like when Gardaí are in action on Dublin’s streets on their Segways.

Gardaí Dabhach Dineen and David Campbell, both from Pearse Street station in Dublin city centre,  are two of the Gardaí who have been specially trained to use the two-wheeled devices to patrol Dublin’s streets.

Garda Campbell said that it takes half an hour to charge a Segway after which it can be driven for 38 kilometres.

A number of Gardaí completed a two day course with Segway Ireland in the Phoenix Park and have done test runs on the streets of the city centre, Garda Campbell said.

“They’re urban, they’re for pedestrian areas more so than on the streets,” he said.

Segways don’t have brakes – instead, users just lean forward to go forward and go back by leaning on their heels. The Segways were donated by the Dublin City Business Association to improve the force’s mobility around the city centre.

Garda Campbell also confirmed that none of the Gardaí have yet fallen off them…

Here they are in action:
