GARDAÍ SHOT A man with a “less lethal” round in Dundalk, Co Louth on Monday night after he failed to drop a knife he was wielding.

The incident happened at around 9.30pm, when uniformed and armed gardaí responded to “an incident involving a male armed with a knife at an open car park in Dundalk”, a spokesperson said.

Gardaí said the man, who is in his 30s, received medical treatment and that he has since been charged following his arrest.

“Gardaí engaged with the male to try and deescalate the situation and directed him to drop the knife.

“The male did not comply and gardaí from the Armed Support Unit discharged one round from a 40mm less-lethal force option,” the spokesperson said, adding that the man was successfully disabled.

The man is due before Drogheda District Court at 10.30am.
