Gay Byrne thanks fans for well wishes following heart attack

GAY BYRNE HAS thanked members of the public for their support following his heart attack.

Late last night it emerged that the 81-year-old suffered a heart attack on Monday.

This evening, Byrne released the following statement: ”I’m feeling better and on the road to recovery. Thanks to all for the well wishes.”

RTÉ said the broadcaster is “doing well”.

In a statement released last night, Byrne’s family appealed for privacy while he recovers.

Byrne presented the flagship Late Late Show for nearly 37 years between 1962 and 1999. He also hosted the Rose of Tralee for 17 years between 1977 and 1994.

Since 2009 he has presented The Meaning of Life, a series exploring issues of faith and meaning in life.

He served as chairman of the Road Safety Authority (RSA) between 2006 and 2014.
