RTE BROADCASTER GAY Byrne is “recovering well” following a heart attack.

The 81-year-old suffered the heart attack yesterday according to a statement from RTE.

He is currently recovering in hospital.

“All his friends and colleagues across RTE are thinking of him and wish him all the best with his recovery,” the broadcaster said in its statement.

The statement adds that the Byrne family have requested privacy at this time.

Byrne presented the flagship Late Late Show for nearly 37 years between 1962 and 1999. He also hosted the Rose of Tralee for 17 years between 1977 and 1994.

A staple of RTE morning radio for over 40 years, Byrne moved to Lyric FM after his ‘retirement’. He also served as presenter of the short-lived Irish tv version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Since 2009 he has presented The Meaning of Life, a series exploring issues of faith and meaning in life. Noteworthy guests have included Stephen Fry, Hozier, and Gabriel Byrne.

He served as chairman of the Road Safety Authority (RSA) between 2006 and 2014.
