Get lumbered up for Christmas Tree Throwing Championship

The competition is a novel way to turn Christmas tree recycling into a sport, while at the same time raising funds for charity.

IRELAND’S SECOND EVER Christmas Tree Throwing Championship takes place this Saturday in Ennis, Co Clare.

Men, women and children will battle it out for the Irish tree throwing champion title. Each contestant will get three attempts at throwing a standard 1.5 metre tree. People can also bring along their own used Christmas trees – but remember to remove decorations first.

Last year, Paul Dignam beat off competition from 150 other participants with his seven metre throw. However, he’s still some way off the current world record, which is held by Klaus Pubnaz, who hurled a tree a distance of 12 metres at an event in Germany in December 2010.

All proceeds raised from the event in Ennis will go toward the Clare Branch of Cystic Fibrosis.

How will you dispose of your Christmas tree?

Poll Results:

I have a fake one. (163)
I'm not sure yet. (135)
Recycling it. (97)
Throwing it, obviously. (21)
