SIPTU shop steward hit by van at Greyhound picket

The man was not seriously injured and gardaí are investigating the incident.

A SIPTU SHOP steward was knocked down by a van while he was picketing outside a Greyhound recycling plant today.

Earlier this evening a van exited the recycling plant in Clondalkin, Dublin, and hit the man. He was taken to Tallaght Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The union has pickets at two Greyhound plant in Dublin as part of an ongoing dispute over wage cuts.

SIPTU Organiser Henry O’Shea, who witnessed the incident, told TheJournal.ie that the van nearly hit him and sent his union colleague “flying”.

Gardaí also confirmed there had been in incident and said they are investigating it.

A spokesperson for Greyhound commented that the van was a private vehicle and did not belong to the company. He also said those picketing outside the premises had been told to keep the gateway clear as trucks were coming and going all day.

He added that the company will be reviewing CCTV footage tomorrow morning and will then make a full statement.
